DigiLocker is a key initiative under Digital India, the Government of India's flagship program aimed at transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Targeted at the idea of paperless governance, DigiLocker is a platform for issuance and verification of documents & certificates in a digital way, thus eliminating the use of physical documents. Some interesting information about DigiLocker : DigiLocker is a flagship initiative of Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) under Digital India programme. DigiLocker aims at ‘Digital Empowerment’ of citizen by providing access to authentic digital documents to citizen’s digital document wallet. The issued documents in DigiLocker system are deemed to be at par with original physical documents as per Rule 9A of the Information Technology (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries providing Digital Locker facilities) Rules, 2016 notified on February 8, 2017 vide G.S.R. 711(E).

 

Digital Locker system has the following objectives

  • Enable e-Signing of documents and make them available electronically and online Minimize the use of physical documents.
  • Enable digital empowerment of residents by providing them with Digital Locker on the cloud.
  • Ensure authenticity of the e-documents and thereby eliminate usage of fake documents
  • Secure access to Govt. issued documents through a web portal and mobile application for residents.
  • Anytime, anywhere access to the documents by the resident
  • Open and interoperable standards based architecture to support a well-structured standard document format to support easy sharing of documents across departments and agencies.
  • Reduce administrative overhead of Govt. departments and agencies and make it easy for the residents to receive services.

How to create account on DigiLocker :

  • First visit digilocker.gov.in or digitallocker.gov.in 
  • After this, click on check in on the right. 
  • Enter your mobile number and new page will open there.
