New Delhi: The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), the apex policy making body of the indirect tax department, has put its stamp of approval on the decision of cadre restructuring of field formation under CBEC on Wednesday.

According to the letter to DGHRD from CBEC vide F.No. A. 11019/08/2013-Ad. IV dated December 18, 2013, a total of 18,067 additional posts has been created. Out of this, 2118 posts created for Group ‘A’ officials, 5160 posts for superintendents and 5040 for Inspectors. The remaining created for other Group B, C category officials consisting of CAO, AO, Havaldars etc.

The sanctioned strength of CBEC has been increased from 66,808 to 84875.

The posts approved for creation include 2118 temporary Group ‘A’ posts created in Junior Time Scale for a period of five years from today.

This will enable Superintendent-level personals to get promotion to Group ‘A’ officer as Assistant Commissioner, as there has been stagnation at this rank.

The post of chief commissioner has been redesignated as principal commissioner. 38 new posts of chief commissioner/director general have been created in the pay scale Rs.75000-80000.

14 new posts of principal chief commissioner /principal DG have been created in fixed pay scale of Rs 80,000 per month on par with secretaries in the Union government and police chiefs.

This is the first time Indian Customs and Excise Service officers in the field formation have been sanctioned the apex grade of salary and these officers will now be getting equivalent pay on par with secretaries to the government of India and Directors-Generals of Police.

The whole exercise is expected to be completed in the next two years.

The primary objective of the cadre restructuring of CBEC is to improve the efficiency of the indirect tax collectors, maximise revenue collection and provide better services to the taxpayers, apart from improving career prospects of the employees.
